Sovereign Subjects

Romans 13:1-3
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.

Because God is sovereign, He controls even nations and politics.  All leaders are set in place for His purpose, even when that reason is not aligned with how we insist it has to be.  So when we fight against or criticize in an ungodly way, we are resisting God’s will, and even God Himself.  In the end, we can bring judgment down as it says here, and the rulers may be a terror to us if we fight unlawfully.  If we instead do good, however, and let God’s purpose and will be done, even when there appears to be much to complain about or resist, we have a clear conscience before God and man.
