Empathy and Enemies

Romans 12:14-16
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Serving others out of the grace, mercy, and forgiveness given us comes out with love in action.  Here we are commanded to not retaliate with ill will when attacked, but to bless the persecutor for their good.  Who knows if God’s grace through us may be the avenue He uses to open the eyes of their heart?  So we are to empathize in humility, not thinking ourselves better or more wise, but as everyone else, created in God’s image for His glory through the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We are only so wise as His wisdom guides us humbly to His word and God Himself, who alone is only wise.  Our opinion is not wisdom, but folly if it is not founded entirely on that word.
