Luke 23:42-43
42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” 43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
The one criminal condemned to die realized he deserved what was coming, yet when he saw Jesus keeping silent to die innocently, he realized He was Lord and asked to be remembered at His kingdom's coming. Jesus went further to promise that the man would go from death to eternal life without deserving it. Jesus freely commuted the sentence and granted so much more. We also cannot earn a place in heaven by doing good - only a free gift paid at His price can do that.
