John 21:21-24
21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” 23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?” 24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.
Jesus may allow some like John to live long until He is done revealing things to them and using them to tell of God and His glory. Others like Peter may be put to death for faith in Christ or even just be taken home early. The true testimony is what matters as it aligns with God's sovereign plan. Since He is in absolute control of all, we who are His should embrace our calling and follow to be conformed to His image, that of God in whose image we were created.
