Acts 2:5-11
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? ... —we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
When God first came to live forever in His people, they spoke to many from around the world who came when they heard Jesus' followers talking in all their languages of all the wonderful things God has done. They marveled. They were amazed and in awe. The tongues, the world's languages were all spoken to unconfused listeners, bringing together what confusion was given when the Tower of Babel was attempted. Now unity would come in Christ, made possible by God's Spirit making it possible. The church had begun as the gospel was heard.
