What Comes Out is from the Heart

Mark 7:13-23
13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.” 18 So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?” 20 And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

When we put tradition over God's words to us we will inevitably allow our fallen, fleshly thoughts and motives drive us in sin.  This is due to the pride in our supposed knowledge of good and evil apart from His guidelines on what evil and good are - the original mistake of sin.  We are made unclean by our hearts and what results out of our words that disobey God as a result of our foolish pride.  We need clean hearts, not washing the outside appearance only.
