Matthew 21:45-46
45 Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. 46 But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet.
When religious people have their system of belief threatened and feel it is a personal judgement, they want to fight - even if they do not fully understand God's truth that reveals their error and motives that come short of His standards. Here they did not want accountability to God to upset their comfortable and self serving system, and wanted to grab hold of Jesus. But they realized that others would judge or attack them if they did so to one others looked up to. So they began plotting to get rid of Him...
