Wisdom and Power, Glory and Honor

Matthew 13:54-58
54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? ... 57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” 58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Those who see Jesus as just a man think He is just another Joe from next door, and so question how He could ever do things only God can do. His wisdom and power cannot be reconciled as just a man, so they take offense. God chooses not to do many great things when people do not take Him at His word. Such lack of faith would not be moved by great miracles nor by deep wisdom alone. So we preach Christ crucified, even when a stumbling block to wisdom and miracle seekers.
