Judgment and Mercy

Matthew 11:20-24
20 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ... 24 But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”

God owes us judgement, but offers forgiveness and mercy. He demonstrated who He is by the power and authority behind all the miraculous works He did while walking this earth toward the cross. To think that if He had showed these things to past cities - even Sodom destroyed utterly by fire - that even they would have repented and turned from rebellious sin against their Creator and Lord. So we do well to tell the good news of Christ laying down His life to buy us back from destruction and bring us from darkness into His marvelous light! This is why we celebrate His death and resurrection. This is a Good Friday of suffering a cruel death to heal us inside by those stripes.
