Matthew 10:38-39
38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.
If we follow Jesus, we must be also willing to bear our rejection even unto a cruel death on a tree, carrying that on our shoulders - to death also if necessary, knowing life will come from the grave. We are only worthy of the suffering and death in the sense that we are willing to so be treated for His sake in offering the gospel of reconciling forgiveness to others. We do not earn good standing, but respond with our called "duty" out of love (Luke 17:10), becoming as Him to bring Jesus to the lost. So we lose this life to find life unending.
