Psalms 119:121-128
ע AYIN
121 I have done justice and righteousness;
Do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Be surety for Your servant for good;
Do not let the proud oppress me.
123 My eyes fail from seeking Your salvation
And Your righteous word.
124 Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy,
And teach me Your statutes.
125 I am Your servant;
Give me understanding,
That I may know Your testimonies.
126 It is time for You to act, O LORD,
For they have regarded Your law as void.
127 Therefore I love Your commandments
More than gold, yes, than fine gold!
128 Therefore all Your precepts concerning all things
I consider to be right;
I hate every false way.
This song is about God’s word, but also about mercy, understanding, love, and going the right way. It begins with doing our best to do what is fair and right in God’s eyes, knowing that He honors those who honor Him by heeding what they hear from His mouth put on paper. It asks for Him to be our guarantee for being able to do any good and for our good according to the covenant which Hebrews 7:22 speaks about. We also pray that the proud ones are stopped from oppressing us as God’s people, especially as we seem so distant from the deliverance we desire and His righteous word to lead and comfort us. Our plea is not to be vindicated by our works to earn righteousness, but according to His great mercy, which is grace in action, and the teaching of His word by Him. We are truly God’s servants who need instruction for understanding to know the testimonies of God’s will to walk out in our obedience in action. Only Spirit-given comprehension from the scriptures is of any use to us, not our own reasoning or philosophy of men. Because others around us think that the Bible is meaningless and does not apply to life, we ask God to make it known to them in reality which cannot be argued against; conviction of our lost state and the good news of grace in forgiveness comes by faith which He alone can provide. We pray for that to happen. As for we who have believed, we love all of God’s word, whether convicting or comforting; it is of more value than any mere material riches which the lost pursue relentlessly. We know that the right is not man’s might, but God’s alone, and His word shows the right way to live. This should make us despise every false way which does not align with the scriptures. He teaches us about His love that we may in turn so love one another. He gives us understanding to know how and why. The mercy we learn from Him humbles us to show mercy to our oppressors. The right way to live is found in the teaching of the scriptures by His Spirit living in us and others called and gifted to preach and teach to give the mean of what we read and study together. These lessons are found in this psalm for us concerning His word and work and will.
