Psalms 131:1-3
A Song of Ascents. Of David.
1 LORD, my heart is not haughty,
Nor my eyes lofty.
Neither do I concern myself with great matters,
Nor with things too profound for me.
2 Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul,
Like a weaned child with his mother;
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the LORD
From this time forth and forever.
What is faith, trusting in the LORD? How does it look and what are the results? Here David the beloved psalmist is humbled by knowing Him, and therefore trusting. He does not lift himself high in his own estimation, though with all the military exploits and victories he certainly had a worldly right to do so. He do not lift up his eyes to desire more fame and power and recognition, though we see others rising up in society by these very attitudes of pride and selfish ambitions. Neither did David concern himself with matters of the world beyond the scope given by God to reign within. He did not wind himself into the deep things beyond his ability which encroached into God’s mysteries not revealed to him or us. No, what the man after God’s own heart did was to mature in the knowledge and wisdom of humility (1 Peter 5:6-7, James 4:10, Hebrews 5:14) under God’s mighty hand of providence and learning, just as we now grow in sanctification in Christ our Lord. Like a grown infant, he matured into a toddler in quietness and strength (Isaiah 30:15). The beloved psalmist gave us an example of resting in Ht Lord as we grow in knowledge and wisdom, relying on Him as a child does his mother who lovingly raises and nourishes until he can take in food on his own. That is the soul’s stance in the trust of godliness and faith which is reliance on God’s working and good providence for our good and His glory. Like this psalm ends, we should therefore hope in our Lord at all times and never stop, looking to eternity into which we mature in conformity to Christ (Romans 8:29, Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:22-24). May we all likewise trust God as we humble ourselves and grow into a quiet maturity of peace and rest in our Lord as we ascend to worship Him.
