Psalms 124:1-8
A Song of Ascents. Of David.
1 "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,"
Let Israel now say—
2 "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
3 Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;
4 Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have gone over our soul;
5 Then the swollen waters
Would have gone over our soul."
6 Blessed be the LORD,
Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
What a song to sing while ascending to worship our LORD God! He is truly on the side of His people, of whom we all are in Christ (Galatians 3:28). We can therefore say these words along with the chosen of Israel, that because He is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)? When our enemy rises against us as a roaring Lion, we can trust in our Defender to keep us from the worst of their wrath against the Lord and His anointed, and against we who are His with the testimony of Jesus the Messiah (Revelation 12:17). We are not flooded over by their attacks and hatred, our souls are not extinguished; no, rather we are kept from being prey to the roaring Lion (Psalm 22:13, 1 Peter 5:8). Blessed be the Lord! He has set us free in atoning grace from the hunter of our souls; He has broken the chains, and we are free indeed (John 8:38)! Yes, our help truly is only in God’s name (Acts 4:12), the creator of the universe and we who inhabit it. What joy and hope in the eternal security of His work to bring us to Himself as our Defender! Amen and amen!
