Song of Victory over God’s Enemies

Psalms 129:1-8

A Song of Ascents.

1 "Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth,"
Let Israel now say—

2 "Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth;
Yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed on my back;
They made their furrows long."

4 The LORD is righteous;
He has cut in pieces the cords of the wicked.

5 Let all those who hate Zion
Be put to shame and turned back.

6 Let them be as the grass on the housetops,
Which withers before it grows up,
7 With which the reaper does not fill his hand,
Nor he who binds sheaves, his arms.

8 Neither let those who pass by them say,
"The blessing of the LORD be upon you;
We bless you in the name of the LORD!"

The enemies of God and His people will taste defeat.  The people of God will sing songs of victory (Isaiah 35:10, Colossians 3:16, Ephesians 5:19-20) as they go up to worship their deliverer!  Though we suffer affliction in adversity of circumstances, we can join in with all of God’s people to testify to this victory (fully in Christ, 1 Corinthians 15:57-58) which does not allow the evil one and his minions working through fallen and unregenerate men to prevail against us (Matthew 16:18, Revelation 12:7-8).  Though the enemies of God beat and torture us, the righteous Lord and Judge will carry out the sentence hanging over all who continue in rebellious disbelief and disobedience of refusal to believe and acknowledge His work (John 6:29) of righteousness on our behalf.  Yes, let all those opposed to Him and His Anointed be put to shame and turn back from pursuing the chosen children of God.  May they be as the psalm says here, burned up grass (Matthew 13:40) which is not gathered for food, but consumed in His judgment of wrath on ungodliness and sin.  As this song of hope in judgment ends, it reminds us that those who defy God are not to be blessed by us either, yet as Romans 12:14 reminds us, we are to bless those who persecute us, even if in His name (1 Peter 4:16, 19); those who continue to blaspheme and defy the Lord are not to be blessed.  This is the difference between loving our enemies and encouraging their sin.  In the end, we who are called out and chosen will sing victory over our enemies (Revelation 6:10) which God will not bless, but curse with eternal torment in the lake of fire.  May we therefore be about our Father’s business as we go about our business, with the gospel of Christ Jesus the Lord, that enemies may become brethren.
