John 1:4-5
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
This Word who from the beginning was God is light and life. The darkness did not comprehend nor could it apprehend or overtake the light of God the word; this light is life to us, to all men and women ever born. God spoke life into the first man in Eden, and this breath of life cannot be created by man - but a word from God is spoken, and so it is. He gives light and life, and it is good.
