Acts 6:5-7
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.
A deacon who stood out was Stephen, and we hear later of Philip as well. Stephen was chosen to serve tables because he had much faith in Christ and walked in step with the Spirit of God within Him. His trust enabled his service. It also freed up the apostles to spread the words of life far and wide, so many became disciples as the great commission was lived out. Even the Jewish priests turned to the Messiah. Both serving tables and serving the gospel were reliant on faith, obedience, and scripture.
