Mark 2:23-28
23 Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”... 27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Jesus Christ was the word that spoke the world into existence; before Moses and the Law, He has ultimate authority to define the day of rest at Creation as well as for all His creation - us. The Sabbath was God's rest from work, and we are also given the chance for rest from our work for Him. We are not to serve a day with obligation and punishment, but with relief from our efforts and rest in Him who made us.
