Psalms 19:1-14
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
2 Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.
4 Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.
In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun,
5 Which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
And rejoices like a strong man to run its race.
6 Its rising is from one end of heaven,
And its circuit to the other end;
And there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
Yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
11 Moreover by them Your servant is warned,
And in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
And I shall be innocent of great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.
The perfect revelation of the LORD is lifted up in this song of King David. He begins with how the heavens of creation echo the glory of God throughout the universe and down to man looking upwards. The day and night both speak this glory and teach knowledge of Him to those who pay attention and consider these things (Romans 1:19-20). His visual voice is heard loudly in every land among every people and language, as a line tracing a path leading to Him across the world. Even the path of the sun blazing above our heads traverses the heavens as if to enter its own tabernacle of rest for the night! When sunrise comes, it is likened to a bridegroom coming out, and as a runner sprinting across the day with strength and purpose to remain undefeated. It rises on one end of the horizon and races to the other, bringing heat and light as designed by its Creator (Genesis 1:3, 16). These things all come from God’s word, the scriptures, to us that we may see as the psalmist, to understand the perfection of His word traversing through the world. His word not only created the universe, including the earth we stand on, the sun giving sustenance, and the moon and stars to track seasons and help us navigate across the globe, but it also converts our souls. It changes us. It is certain and embodies all truth. It gives wisdom to the simple. Because it is right, it brings great joy to our hearts and minds. Because it is pure, His word gives light to truly see (John 1:1, 5, 9). And as to the fear of the LORD, that should never end for us, for it is as pure and never ending as His word. All the judgments of God are always right. They are always righteous. We should run after them as the sun purposefully races across the sky every day, more precious than corruptible treasures such as gold, and sweeter to eat than the purest honey (Jeremiah 15:16, Ezekiel 3:3, Job 23:12) with full desire. We are to likewise lust after His word in obedient desire as 1 John 2:15-17 reminds us. That word warns and rewards us, keeping us from hidden sins and changing our corrupted characters. Like David, we must pray for God’s word to put to death our presumptions and other ungodliness by the help of this word and His Spirit (Romans 8:13). Then we are blameless and harmless as His children as Philippians 2:15 tells us as we work out our salvation’s sanctification with fearful trembling. To sum it up as the psalmist did here, we should pray that our words of response and thoughts exercising our hearts will be acceptable in alignment with God’s word as He envisions us to be. This is God’s perfect revelation through His word to us. Amen!
