Man's Treachery and God's Constancy

Psalms 12:1-8

To the Chief Musician. On an eight-stringed harp. A Psalm of David.

1 Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases!
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
2 They speak idly everyone with his neighbor;
With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips,
And the tongue that speaks proud things,
4 Who have said,
"With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are our own;
Who is lord over us?"

5 "For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy,
Now I will arise," says the LORD;
"I will set him in the safety for which he yearns."

6 The words of the LORD are pure words,
Like silver tried in a furnace of earth,
Purified seven times.

7 You shall keep them, O LORD,
You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

8 The wicked prowl on every side,
When vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

Here is a song revealing the depraved nature of man and the eternal immutable character of God.  Though the number of godly and faithful men seems to decrease and the ones left only are slanderous gossips, though the unfaithful and ungodly do not say what they mean or go back on their word, the LORD has His way.  He will cut off the proud flattering mouths of the insincere.  We see these so often even today, people who think they can say whatever they want with no repercussions, no consequences before God.  They imagine they own their own mouths and they are their own god who says what goes; they are of course sadly mistaken.  God rises up against those who oppress others, though it may not appear to be so because it is done in His time and not to our demands or expectations.  He will protect the poor and needy, and use we His people as instruments to do these things.  We base the words people say un God’s words, words which are pure and holy, words which are as metal with all the cross removed in the fire until no impurities remain.  Based on this perfect word, we know God will keep those hungering and thirsting for His righteousness (Matthew 5:6, John 6:35).  Though the evil (who are opposed to God because they think themselves to rule their own lives) roam about, looking for ones to devour, though wicked words and works appear to rule the day in the societies around us, we can rest in God’s sovereign work and providence to keep us.  Though man is treacherous in his fallen state, God is greater and unchanging in His word and working to bring all into judgment in the end.  This reminds us of Man's Treachery and God's Constancy, the fallen sinful state of the depravity of man and the all-powerful and reigning King of kings and Lord of lords over us all.  What matters then is if we are in God in Christ, trusting in His working and living accordingly. What matters then is if we are in God in Christ, trusting in His working and living accordingly.
