Faith in the LORD's Righteousness

Psalms 11:1-7

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

1 In the LORD I put my trust;
How can you say to my soul,
"Flee as a bird to your mountain"?

2 For look! The wicked bend their bow,
They make ready their arrow on the string,
That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.

3 If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?

4 The LORD is in His holy temple,
The LORD's throne is in heaven;
His eyes behold,
His eyelids test the sons of men.

5 The LORD tests the righteous,
But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.

6 Upon the wicked He will rain coals;
Fire and brimstone and a burning wind
Shall be the portion of their cup.

7 For the LORD is righteous,
He loves righteousness;
His countenance beholds the upright.

David held to His faith in God’s righteousness.  He put all of his trust in the LORD, not just when it was convenient or needed to deliver him from adverse circumstances.  Because of this foundation of trust, the king and servant of God refused to run from trouble as his adversaries waged war against him and his God in whose foundation he was set firmly upon (Matthew 7:24-25).  He was not moved from that foundation, no matter what, but he cried out even more in faith for deliverance when in those circumstances.  He knew that the evil ones took aim at his upright heart where faith abided, as with flaming arrows (Ephesians 6:16) of that wicked one.  David also knew that the foundation was critical to living by that faith, for if it was destroyed, then there was nothing the righteous could do anymore.  He then looked to God, high and lifted up (Isaiah 6:1) on His heavenly throne where He rules sovereignly over all, and confessed that the LORD tests us who follow Him.  The wicked, however, He does not test, because they are opposed to righteousness and cause destruction (as their father the devil, John 10:10).  God actually hates them.  He will judge them righteously because He is holy and cannot allow evil to be ignored through closed fingers before His eyes or a wink and nod to boys being just boys.  No, there is a fiery judgment to come for the one throwing fiery darts and all who join that one (Hebrews 10:27, 30-31, Matthew 25:41).  Their portion is not a happy one with flaming fire of suffering forevermore.  But the LORD loves the righteous, those exercising faith to trust His work and who then rest in His grace (John 6:29, Romans 5:17, 1 Corinthians 1:30, Philippians 3:9), and shows favor to them.  This Psalm exalting faith in the Lord’s righteousness is the song of the redeemed!
