Paul gave everything he had to help others know Christ and grow in Him. Since he suffered persecution and other hardships, it was easy to be sad for him, but he saw it as joyful due to the serving others and building their faith. Then he encouraged them to be joyful along with him! This is part of the goal he ran towards and gave as an example to follow...
Philippians 2:17-18
Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.
