Hebrews 7:20-28 - Our Forever Priest

Hebrews 7:20-28

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:

“The LORD has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’”),

22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.

Jesus the Christ is our great new High Priest of an eternal covenant agreement made by God with His chosen children which is impossible to be broken by him or us according to His word of promise.  This is indeed good news!  The LORD God our Father made this oath to appoint His Son as a forever priest after the shadow example of Melchizedek who appeared to have no known origin or appointment in the physical earthly realm.  The Son who is our High Priest has always existed (John 1:1, 8:58, Ephesians 3:9, Colossians 1:16) and comes from heaven above where we cannot see His origin or know His appointment as Priest except by the revelation of God’s word to reveal this mystery to us.  Unlike Melchizedek, however, the Christ gives us an assurance of an infinitely better covenant agreement promised by God to us.  He never dies.  The one time in the flesh when that part of Him did die was brought back to life out of the grave in that spectacular resurrection to prove the immutability of the covenant with us for eternal life and His everlasting intercession (Hebrews 7:25) for us as our High Priest.  His priesthood never ever ends.  He alone is perfect and sinless so only He could be bothered the perfect Lamb of sacrifice and the perfect priest to administer covering our sin once and for all time in one complete sacrifice for our deliverance from sin’s penalty of the due wrath of God on us.  This High Priest is entirely holy and righteous who sits above the heavens on high to reign sovereignly over all creation.  His offering of Himself covers all our sins, unlike the human high priests who had to repeat the offerings because that kept sinning.  He has no weaknesses because He is and has been perfected forever (Hebrews 2:10, 5:9) as it is written here.  We therefore can rest fully in our guaranteed salvation and standing in Christ as we persevere to the end by his promises to us.  He is our Forever Priest who lives to intercede for our sins which we turn from daily (1 John 1:9) in repentance with faith in their for by His intercession from the throne of the eternal temple where He reigns.
