Hebrews 6:13-20
God’s Infallible Purpose in Christ
13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
Our certain promise of salvation for all the church was given to Abraham who trusted God and took His word when he heard that all nations would be blessed through him. We now know this means the children of God are both his later descendants of Israel (Jacob) and those called by the same faith (Genesis 22:18, Romans 4:13, 16, Galatians 3:8-9, 14) out of all other nations into the family of God who are the church of and in Jesus Christ. God’s promise was certain and inclusive of all He had promised the blessings to who received Him and His Seed (the Son Jesus Christ) by faith (John 1:12) and we now who have come through repentance and faith from fallen Israel and the godless nations together into the Seed of the promised Messiah are now inheritors of that promise! We all have heard, believed, and received Him as the eternal consolation of reconciling peace with God as our refuge of unending hope. This hope anchors our souls in Him who is our promise because Jesus is our eternal High Priest as Melchizedek foreshadowed who always intercedes for us to the Father and in whose righteousness we stand safe and secure from all alarms. His eternal priesthood and perfect unblemished self-sacrifice have bought us at a price and we have the infallible promise of faith under our feet as the solid foundation (1 Corinthians 3:10-11, Ephesians 2:20, 2 Timothy 2:19) on which to stand and never fall away. Since we know our position as the children of God who are the church, both Jew and Gentile, we together can rejoice in the mystery of Christ in us who unites us in Him and bear witness of His marvelous grace that saves us for His proclamation to the rest of the world who need to hear this message of hope. This certain promise of and confession by faith (Matthew 16:18, Ephesians 2:19-20, 21-22) is the solid ground on which the church is built and where we as His faithful children worship and serve Him from.
