Hebrews 3:1-11 - Be Faithful as The Son Was

Hebrews 3:1-11

1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. 3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. 5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, 6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

Be Faithful (Ps. 95:7–11)

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,

8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,

9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.

10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’

11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’”

We are called to faith that works, to be faithful to God’s word as His Son demonstrated to us as our great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16, 6:19-20, 8:1, 5) and Messenger of the gospel for our salvation whom we confess as our Savior and Lord.  The Son always was faithful as the Father called Him to suffer and die while proclaiming the gospel of His kingdom as the Apostle (Messenger) to us.  This Messiah was more glorious than the revered Moses who gave the Law of God and spoke with Him in the holy place, for the Son created Moses and it was His word and Him as God’s divine and living Word (John 1:1, 14) who reigns in the temple where Moses met God and whom we worship.  He alone deserves the honor (Revelation 4:11, 19:1-2) and praise who built the church as the house of God in which we worship as His own house which Moses and all others come to.  We are part of that house, the church, under Him as head and High Priest if we truly trust Him and His work according to His word.  We have this hope that we hold firmly to by faith until the end when He returns to defeat death forever (1 Corinthians 15:25-26, 54-55, 57-58) and bring eternal rejoicing to the momentary flashes we have presently in His final victory and ours in Him.  Because of these things, God has given us His word of the gospel of Jesus Christ that we hear and obey the call and not harden our hearts to the truth of our sin and the punishment due us all.  We need to hear and repent of our rebellion as Israel failed to do in the wilderness after being delivered from bondage in Egypt and who kept testing God instead of heeding His clear commands.  This rebellion had begun in Eden’s Garden (Genesis 2:16-17, 3:5-6, 11, 17, 19) and has been passed by inheritance to all Adam’s offspring (Romans 5:12, 18) since then.  We are no better than the Israelites if we continue to see God’s work in Christ and not turn from sin to Him in repentance by faith to obey the gospel (2 Thessalonians 1:8, 1 Peter 4:17-18) and continue in our wanton ways as we stray from the truth and choose the passing pleasures (Hebrews 11:25) of sin instead.  If we reject His way, truth, and life, then we will not and cannot enter His rest from striving against sin and the consequences of eternal judgment.  Only through the Son of God (John 14:6, Acts 4:12) can we find the way through the truth to enter into eternal life by trusting God’s Son (John 1:12) and resting from our works of striving into His effectual work on the cross for us.  We are to be faithful as the Son was by His example to the Father as testified to by the witness of His Spirit in all who have faith to believe and receive Him and the new life He gives us.
