Praise to the Ruler of Our Inheritance!

Psalms 47:1-9

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

1 Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples!
Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

2 For the LORD Most High is awesome;
He is a great King over all the earth.

3 He will subdue the peoples under us,
And the nations under our feet.

4 He will choose our inheritance for us,
The excellence of Jacob whom He loves.

Selah

5 God has gone up with a shout,
The LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

7 For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with understanding.

8 God reigns over the nations;
God sits on His holy throne.

9 The princes of the people have gathered together,
The people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is greatly exalted.

Praise to our God, the only one who is self-existing, should excite us with deep joy expressed outwardly to Him as in this song declaring who He is by what He does.  He is the sovereign King who rules over the world of His creation, the one who triumphs over all evil and adversity.  Our awesome LORD is the Most-High, ruling over all His subjects and their habitations.  He alone brings everything and everyone into subjection to His rule (Hebrews 2:8), from Israel’s foes to ours in Christ from the foundation of the world fallen from grace into sinful rebellion and rejection of Him and His word meant to heal and guide us.  He has chosen our inheritance (1 Peter 1:3-4), for we could never earn it by our own tainted and imperfect actions.  God is the sovereign ruler of our inheritance (Acts 20:32, 26:18, Ephesians 1:11, 18, Colossians 1:12), and deserves our thankful praise for this indescribable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15)!  His great love has delivered us far more than Israel from worldly enemies, and given these promises in Christ as John 3:16 so adequately says.  Dwell and meditate on these things for a while.  God goes forth with a trumpet call of triumph in all His works, from the deliverance through the Red Sea to the cross and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:52, 1 Thessalonians 4:16).  Therefore, we should naturally praise and thank Him who is our sovereign King of kings and Lord of lords.  We do this not blindly, but with understanding through His word and Spirit as we read and He reveals His will and works to each of us.  In the end, it is not kings or presidents who rule us, but the Lord over them who put them in place; we remember who is in charge on his throne above all and submit all authority under His, exalting God over the temporal and worshiping in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24, 2 Thessalonians 2:13).  He is greatly exalted, so we shout praise to the Ruler of our inheritance! Amen and amen.
