The LORD's Reign in Zion and Forever

Micah 4:1-5

(cf. Is. 2:2–4)

1 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days
That the mountain of the LORD's house
Shall be established on the top of the mountains,
And shall be exalted above the hills;
And peoples shall flow to it.

2 Many nations shall come and say,
"Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
To the house of the God of Jacob;
He will teach us His ways,
And we shall walk in His paths."
For out of Zion the law shall go forth,
And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

3 He shall judge between many peoples,
And rebuke strong nations afar off;
They shall beat their swords into plowshares,
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
Neither shall they learn war anymore.

4 But everyone shall sit under his vine and under his fig tree,
And no one shall make them afraid;
For the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.

5 For all people walk each in the name of his god,
But we will walk in the name of the LORD our God
Forever and ever.

The sovereign reign of the LORD over His people speaks both of Israel in the time of Micah as well as of the time of the eternal kingdom rule to come.  The house of God where He rules from and is worshipped would be restored for a time to Israel then and will be consummated in the New Jerusalem brought down from heaven (Revelation 21:2) forever in the end.  God called many to the old temple to worship Him then and will enjoy the eternal praises of His redeemed whom He will deliver after the final judgment and restoration of all things (Acts 3:21).  In both cases, those whom He draws to Himself there will go to all be taught by God (John 6:45) and walk in His ways of willing obedience as God-pleasers (Colossians 1:10).  His word has gone out and will continue to go out to everyone from the One seated on His sovereign throne of grace with Christ at the right hand of the Father (Acts 2:33, Hebrews 10:12)!  He sits as Judge over all men then and at the end, settling justice on earth as it is  and will ever be done in heaven.  War was stopped temporarily for Israel then and will end eternally after the final judgment and instantiation of heaven brought down to rule on the new earth in His very presence.  There will never be any war learned or fought among men after that.  Instead, we will all sit in contentment with no more fear of sin and death, for those will be done away with (Revelation 21:4, 22:2-3)!  God has spoken and promised these things which we hold to as absolute verity and solid hope (Hebrews 11:1) as the evidence of His sovereign working.  What He says He will certainly bring to pass.  This is the Lord’s promised reign in Zion and forevermore.  We therefore take the promise made to Israel to the more perfect level of all His called and chosen children to walk in His name only and no other, forever and ever.  Amen.
