Romans 8:31-39
God's Everlasting Love
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
"For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter."
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We who are united with Christ in His death and life (Romans 6:5) are inseparable from God forever! Nobody can take us away from this union in Christ whom we have believed into and stand firmly upon that Rock of our faith’s foundation. No circumstance of adversity that we suffer through, no persecution form His name and the gospel, no abject want of food and shelter, danger or violence can separate us from Him and His saving grace of unending life which the covenant of His blood of sacrifice covers all our sin and failure forever. Who then can be against us as it is written here? Since God our Father in heaven (we have none here on earth to call father to insult Him above as some in Rome now do) who gave His only begotten Son as an eternal and lasting sacrifice for our sin that is an unbreakable promise delivered Jesus up for us on the cross of cursing (Galatians 3:13) in our place, since He now freely gives us all things for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3), how could it be possible for anyone to accuse us of being unworthy (because we are in ourselves!) as to cause us to doubt our standing? Because He died and lives again so shall we as promised since He is eternally interceding from the sovereign throne of heaven for us! Though we may suffer for His name and our witness (Revelation 12:17) of His gospel that reveals man’s sin and the consequences of His wrath removed only by trusting and receiving His Son as Lord and Savior, we persevere to the end (1 Peter 1:5, Revelation 3:10), we find comfort and strength in the scriptures such as Psalm 44:22 mentioned here as sheep counted as His to be worthy in Him to suffer (Acts 5:41) as He did for us to buy our deliverance from sin’s penalty. Yes, we are so much more than mere conquerors in Christ; we are victorious (1 Corinthians 15:57) in Him and His love to understand that nothing in heaven above or earth below can ever separate us from Him! This list of things that cannot pry us loose from God’s firm grip on us (John 10:28-29) should be more than enough to comfort and encourage us as we settle (1 Peter 5:10) in our solid faith in God’s work that cannot be lost, stolen or given up. We have eternal salvation, not conditional. We are inseparable by faith in His word and work as we reside in union with Christ who cannot abdicate His throne to make the covenant in His blood be broken. If we are truly saved, we are always saved, and that to be conformed to Christ and Hos righteous holiness. He knows if we are His and we are to live towards this goal in thankful response without fear of losing our standing when we sin. We confess it to Him and grow in our sanctification to be More like Him day by day. This is our steadfast hope in our calling of inseparable grace.
