God With us is The Only Way, Truth, and Life

John 14:1-14

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

1 "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know."

5 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"  6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The Father Revealed

7 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him."

8 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us."

9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

The Answered Prayer

12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus is able to answer prayers because as God among us He is the only way, the absolute truth, and the never ending life with God on earth and in heaven above (John 14:6).  He told the disciples following Him as they listened to His words and followed His example given in action and parables these truths.  He expressly told them if they believe in the God of their Fathers revealed to them that they should believe equally in Him for who He is as was told to them in the sc from the beginning and as they were hearing directly from Him now.  As the way, He promised them a place with the Father and Him that He was preparing for them to inhabit in eternity with Him after He came back to get them and take them there.  He told them they could absolutely trust this promise because it was He who promised it and we know God does not lie (Numbers 23:19) and will give whatever He says since He is all truth embodied.  When they asked how they could know that these promises were true, Jesus told them clearly that Je alone was the Way, Truth, and Life; there was nobody else who could offer what only God was able to promise and follow through to provide accordingly.  Jesus is the LORD.  There is nothing too hard (Jeremiah 32:17) for Him.  We can also trust His promise of eternal life from which nothing or nobody can take away (Isaiah 43:13, John 10:28-29) once given to us by faith in His word which clearly gives us eternal life and an eternity with Him in His presence forevermore (Revelation 21:3, 22:4)!  Seeing Jesus is the same as seeing the Father God we worship and follow by faith according to the grace given us to trust and receive His Son as the ground truth of life.  This is the life who Jesus is and was and always will be.  When Philip then asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus plainly told him that they had already seen the Father by looking on Him standing there before them.  His very words came from the Father in heaven above because the Son sent to the lower parts of the earth below is and was and always will be the living Word of God who spoke all into existence at creation through the Son (John 1:1-2, Colossians 1:16-17).  If that was too difficult for them and us to grasp then observing the works He did while walking on earth that nobody but God Himself could do should be sufficient to convince the doubting mind in all of us.  Jesus then told them that this life born out of faith will enable us to do great things to glorify Him as He did the Father because He was going back above and sending another comforter who is God’s own Spirit to live in and work through all His followers of receptive trust (John 1:12) to salvation.  The things which good tells and promises us we can ask for and confidently receive that give glory and honor in His name to Himself and not to us or for our personal gain or glory.  Asking anything in His name means just that, the things He wills and gives us the humble service to ask for and receive to spread His word of the gospel and not fill our money bags like Judas.  Remember as Calvin wrote, “Paul says, in Jesus Christ all of God’s promises are ‘Yes’, and through Jesus Christ they are ‘Amen’ (2 Cor. 1:20). That is, all of God’s promises in Jesus Christ are assured, firm, secure and fulfilled. And because he is the only way (John 14:6) and our only access to God, when men will not accept him as their way and access nothing can bring them close to God; at his throne they will find only wrath, dread and judgment.”  As followers of Jesus Christ, we live to put Him alone on display as the Way, Truth, and Life by all we ask for that He might work His works in and through each of us.  May we be humble and faithful without personal gain or fame in mind as servants of the Most High God.  Amen and amen.
