Jeremiah 22:24-30
24 "As I live," says the LORD, "though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were the signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck you off; 25 and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those whose face you fear—the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of the Chaldeans. 26 So I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, into another country where you were not born; and there you shall die. 27 But to the land to which they desire to return, there they shall not return.
28 "Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol—
A vessel in which is no pleasure?
Why are they cast out, he and his descendants,
And cast into a land which they do not know?
29 O earth, earth, earth,
Hear the word of the LORD!
30 Thus says the LORD:
'Write this man down as childless,
A man who shall not prosper in his days;
For none of his descendants shall prosper,
Sitting on the throne of David,
And ruling anymore in Judah.'"
The evil and idolatry of the king of Judah, Coniah (Jeconiah or Jehoiachin), led to this message of judgment on him and his descendants. They would be taken into captivity and not reign on the promised throne of King David. They would not prosper. They would be cast out by the LORD for his pattern of sin and idolatry whole rejecting the word of the LORD. They would be therefore removed from God’s promised land of holiness and not permitted to ever return. Such are the wages of continuing sin. The prophet uttered God’s words so that the world could hear the consequences for sin and worship of dead gods over Him that others might hear and turn to follow in righteousness and worship in spirit and on truth (John 4:23-24) all the days of their lives. A warning of all throughout time until His return. Kiss the Son and trust in Him to be delivered from certain judgment which we all have earned (Psalm 2:12, John 11:26, 14:1, 6)!
