Proverbs 8:22-36
22 "The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way,
Before His works of old.
23 I have been established from everlasting,
From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.
24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,
When there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was brought forth;
26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields,
Or the primal dust of the world.
27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 When He established the clouds above,
When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,
29 When He assigned to the sea its limit,
So that the waters would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth,
30 Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,
31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world,
And my delight was with the sons of men.
32 "Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction and be wise,
And do not disdain it.
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the LORD;
36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul;
All those who hate me love death."
The excellence of wisdom is seen in the creation of the universe. The wisdom of God is identified with His Word, who we know is His Son (John 1:1-3, 18) through whom He created all things great and small (Colossians 1:16-17). Before the works of the LORD were begun, He was there, established from before time (Micah 5:2, Psalm 90:2). God’s wisdom is expressed through and in His eternally existing and living Word from everlasting to everlasting. This wisdom then we heed is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Creation is described here when He was making the waters, land, and heavens above as recorded in Genesis 1:1-3, 6, 9, 16). In wisdom His word spoke and it was so; the scriptures make it clear that He was here before the primal dust of the earth from which He created us in His image and gave us His breath of life, and so we should be in awe and listen well to do as we were made, for His glory and honor. He was there when He wisely drew out the heavens above and the seas below, setting limits for the ocean and times marked out by the sun and moon and stars. Yes, God’s Word of wisdom is the Master Craftsman, the Architect of us and of our faith in his works (Hebrews 2:10, 12:2) for us. Yes, He was there as God’s rejoicing and delight, having great joy in His creation, to include all the people He made. All was made and declared to be good in that wisdom. Therefore, we should know and understand this wisdom by living accordingly. We are to keep God’s ways according to His word, hearing His instruction and taking it to heart by living as we are lovingly told for our good and His glory. Then we become wise, conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29, 2 Corinthians 3:18) and not looking down with disobedience on His Word. We are happy and fruitful when we stop to listen every day, knowing we have found life in Him and by Him. That is favor from the LORD, knowing Him and His Son through the word written for our understanding and wisdom. But if we disbelieve and disobey, we sin against our own lives made in His image and love death instead. We choose life in the living of it according to His word of wisdom in all creation, written and incarnate, eternal in the heavens.
